Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Pain

Need Relief and Treatment for a Pain in the Jaw?

Your TMJ, which is an abbreviation for Temporomandibular Joint, is located just in front of your ears and connects your jawbone to your skull. Chewing, talking, yawning, moving your mouth side-to-side and many other movements every day make it one of the most used joints in your body.

TMJ Treatment Toorak Melbourne

If you suffer from headaches and jaw pain, you may have TMD

Recurring headaches, face, neck or shoulder pain experienced by some patients may be attributed to a misaligned jaw and strained jaw and facial muscles. This can also be known as Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMD).

Contributing factors include:

  • Grinding or clenching your teeth
  • Injury to the jaw resulting from an accident or sporting injury
  • The presence of osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis in the TMJ

To determine correct jaw alignment and rule out TMJ being the cause of any pain or discomfort, K1 Dental’s Melbourne team can complete a comprehensive physical examination and oral health assessment. We may also take detailed x-rays and review your medical history.

Treatment for TMJ Pain

There are a number of options available to treat TMJ and alleviate discomfort.

One of the most common treatment options is a dental splint or night guard. Made from a high-grade plastic, they look similar to a sport mouthguard and fit precisely over the upper and lower teeth. They re-position your bite to prevent the upper and lower teeth from coming together, reducing the effects of clenching or grinding your teeth.

Depending on your symptoms and severity, you may be referred to a specialist for further diagnosis and treatment alternatives.
