IV Sedation: All the Treatment, None of the Pain

When is IV sedation appropriate?

Sleep Dentistry Toorak Melbourne

IV sedation, also known as ‘sleep dentistry’, allows nervous patients to relax during treatment

IV sedation (often referred to as Sleep Dentistry), is a pain-free way for patients to receive the dental treatment they need with the benefit of sedation.

It is well-suited to patients who suffer from significant anxiety, and who would otherwise forgo necessary dental treatment.

Unlike a general anaesthetic, you still remain conscious with IV sedation, and will be able to follow instructions from the dentist. You will also be aware of your surroundings despite being in a deeply relaxed state. Following the procedure, however, most patients report little to no memory of the noises, smells, tastes, injections or drilling.

Patient Considerations for Sedation Dentistry

Conducted under strict guidelines, your breathing and pulse are closely monitored throughout your procedure by Dr Barry Creighton, who is qualified and highly experienced in IV Sedation. He will explain the procedure in detail and answer any questions you may have. Of course, Dr Creighton will also assess your suitability for IV Sedation prior to undergoing the procedure.

  • You should not eat or drink anything for at least six hours before your appointment.
  • As the effects can take several hours to subside, you will definitely be unable to drive, and will need to be accompanied home.
  • You should also allow yourself 24 hours to rest and recover fully.
